The weather is getting colder and we like to give our horses something special for these cold winter evenings. Bran Mashes are a fun treat, easy to make, and you can get creative with the presentation! Be sure to check with your vet before you feed anything new to your horse.
2 quarts bran
7 cups of hot tap water
1/3 cup of "scraped'' carrots
1/4 cup of chopped apple
1/2 cup molasses
Put bran In a small feed bucket. Stir in hot tap water(should be moist , like porridge). Sprinkle on carrots ("scraped" means: cut the carrots like sharpening a pencil with a knife, you will get little carrot shavings!) and chopped apples.Dribble on molasses.Stir slightly with your finger to make sure the mash is not to hot!
We learned how to make a mash when we brought a horse to Tuft's Large Animal Hospital. The nurse said she made many every day and she did her best to make them delicious!
This has always been a favorite activity at our camps anytime of the year.
